Rental car pickup for all companies is at the respective kiosk located just outside the main entrance of the terminal across the street. Hilo International Airport occupies 1391 acres about two miles east of Hilo, on the eastern shore of the Island of Hawaii.

The rental company kiosks are located adjacent to the baggage claim area. No need to stand in line there if you already have a reservation. The free shuttles to the rental car lots are located just outside of the main entrance. Kona International Airport at Keahole occupies 3450 acres of land about seven miles northwest of Kailua-Kona on the Island of Hawaii.

Choose The Insurance When Renting a Car

Car Rental Hawaii is committed to obtaining the best possible deals for New Zealand travelers coming to Hawaii looking for renting a car. Certainly you start by choosing a car or car-size. But don’t forget to think about your personal insurance needs. We want to inform you about your insurance options so that you can make the appropriate choice when you decide to book a rental car. 

Our standard deals include Basic Insurance only — just enough to legally drive the car. This is because most Americans have their own car insurance covering their personal needs. If you rent the car with Basic Insurance and anything happens to the car or towards others, it is your liability. If you add insurance at the counter, it will cost up to $55 per day on top of the confirmed rate. 

We want to avoid this unpleasant experience and offer you a so-called Insurance Package Deal. This includes 100% Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and up to $1 million additional Liability Insurance (EP). Furthermore, you also get one additional driver and one free tank of gas (you pick up the car full and return it empty). Booking this Insurance Package Deal is mostly cheaper than the rate with no insurance included. A non-US driver’s license is needed to qualify for this deal!

We offer two ways to book a rental car with us:

  1. With Basic Insurance only: In this case, you are 100% liable for any damage to the vehicle or to third parties.
  2. With Additional Insurance included: CDW covers 100% with no excess; EP covers $1 million of third-party liability.

Planning Your Visit to Big Island

For Hawaii the same visa rules apply as for any visit to the USA. Make sure you have a valid driver’s license for the USA. It is rather warm and sunny in Hawaii most of the year, so pack lightly, but don’t forget some clothing for occasional rain. Whether you visit Hawaii on a cruise ship or come here by plane to one of the airports, car rental opportunities are always nearby.

There are so many books and websites and pictures you can use to help plan and prepare for your stay. You can either prepare your visit with a detailed plan which you follow, or "go with the flow" and on each new day freshly decide what you will do. In any case, it’s good to have a good overview of the Hawaiian Islands — Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Big Island — and what they offer. Once the car is confirmed, we’ll send you a confirmation email which contains the confirmation number as well as the final price. This price is not going to change unless you purchase additional services or upgrades.

Please note: Taxes are subject to change without notice. The government can add or raise taxes — however, we cannot take responsibility for any tax changes.

You will receive a personal confirmation number after we have placed the reservation for you. This number guarantees you the specified rental car. You can always call the rental car company directly to verify this information — but note: they can’t change or cancel your reservation over the phone. Since you booked on our site, their website doesn’t show the reservation. Nonetheless, it is present in the systems which the agencies and their call center access for various logistical purposes.

Once the car is confirmed (with a confirmation number), the reservation is guaranteed. So make sure that you have your reservation number ready when you approach the rental car agency for pick-up.

At our site you find cars in all sizes and from all rental agencies all over Hawaii. So, you don’t have to bother about which agency to choose — you simply select your dates and the car of your choice. We show you the cars available and their prices. You select the option you like best.

When you book the car on our site, we will need your email address. The following happens in the background:

  1. We make a binding reservation in the system of the rental agency for the car and the time that you chose.
  2. You get a confirmation via email — and the confirmation number entitles you to pick up the car at the rental agency at the selected pick-up location.
  3. You pay — at the rental car agency — the price we confirmed in the email (only taxes are "subject to change").
  4. If you want to change or cancel your reservation, you contact us.
