Car Rental Hawaii Frequently Asked Questions
A:Yes, unfortunately it is true. They started charging at certain Hotels on Maui as well (even though there is no room shortage like there is on Waikiki).
No, you cannot avoid the parking fee by renting a car every day. The rental car agencies changed the rates for Waikiki (they call them "resort rates" now) and instead of paying the parking fee to the Hotel, you are now paying the same money to the rental car company. In addition, you have to stand in line every morning for 45 minutes to get your rental car.
Our advice: Book the car at the airport. You save the transfer fee and get a lower rental car rate. Then pay the hotel parking fee. It is less hassle and you are going to spend the same amount of money. But you will not end up wasting your valuable time standing in line every morning waiting for a car!
A: We have such a high volume each year, we can negotiate great deals with the rental car companies and we pass the discount on to our clients.
A: Some of the prices we negotiated with the Big Rental Car Companies are so low that they will not allow us to show the company Logo or name. It stands for the Brand Names of some of the biggest Brand Rental Car Company Names.
This means when you choose this "extra discounted car size", which often is cheaper than the smalles car available or cheaper than the same car without that "ad on", that it is up to the company at the point and moment when you pick up your car to give to you what ever is the best for them.
Often people are happy if they receive a free upgrade. However, note, that it may not be just a car class up - some customers of ours complained because they received a Minivan after they booked the "compact OR LARGER" or "Wild Card". It was explained to them, that if they want a Midsize or Fullsize, they would have to pay an extra "upgrade fee" even so, that they would receive a Minivan for the low rate booked. So, if you dont want to have to drive a Minivan or if it is a hassle for you to drive a very large car, then rather dont use that specific option.
A: Absolutely not. Once you receive a confirmation number from us, you will also get the information directly from the rental agency. The agency cannot tell how you placed the reservation. It is like in an airplane when you are sitting next to a person who paid 40% more for the seat next to you... same quality, same service.
A: No, you can simply go to our cancellation page, enter your confirmation number and Last Name, and cancel or change the reservation at no fee.
A: You will receive a confirmation number after we place the reservation for you. This number guarantees you the specified rental car. You can always call the rental car company directly, to verify this information (they won't allow you to make changes or cancellations over the phone because it was booked through us as well as you can not look up the reservation on their Website).
A: After arriving at the Airport, please ask for the designated area outside the baggage claim where the Car Rental Agency Shuttle Busses pick up clients. Then board the bus for a 2 minute ride to the far side of the parking lot where the car agencies are located The Alamo Agency in Honlolulu is 1 Minute more to drive. Just one Block further than the others however, that saves you 15% in Airport fees and Taxes. While worth for one minute longer to sit in a Shuttle bus.
NKT Travel arranges rental cars from the following Hawaiian airports:

A: No, it is the Shuttle Bus for the Car Rental Agency on which you are holding the reservation.
Q: Does it cost extra to drop the car off at a different location from where we picked it up?

Q: Are there any additional charges beside the price stated in the confirmation email?
A: Once the car is confirmed, we send you a confirmation email which contains the confirmation number as well as the final price. This price is not going to change (the Base Rate), unless you purchase additional services or upgrades.

Q: Do I need additional Insurance?
A: This is something you have to determine by talking to your car insurance company or your credit card company (some credit cards cover Insurance when paying the charges with it).

Q: Is the Jeep Wrangler soft Top?
A: Most Rental car companies in Hawaii have Soft Top and Hart Top Jeep Wranglers in the fleet and let you choose from whats in the lot when you get there. Some people do not want a soft top out of security reasons. They dont let us book either way. We can just book a Jeep Wrangler 2 or 4 Door
Alamo decided to have mostly Hart Top Wranglers and they replace the soft top Wranglers with hart tops. With the hart top you can take out a big part of the roof.

Cruise Ship Customers
Q: How does pick up at the pier work?
A: There are free shuttle buses shuttling between the Cruise-Ship and the pick-up Agency. Most of the pick-up Agencies are at the nearby Airport. *
NEW: Honolulu the pickup is arranged by the Wiakiki Agency, not anylonger by the Honolulu Airport Agency. Lihue and Hilo are at the nearby airport.
*Since all the Agencys in Waikiki are much more expensive, compare to the Airport, WE suggest to take and pay a taxi, and pick up the car at the Airport when you return from your cruise. And visa versa when you arrive to the cruise. This may cost you money (about 20 Dollars), but you get a much better Rentalrate and dont have to pay the costly "drop off charges" of 35 Dollars on top of the already higher resort Rate for the rental car. A N D you will not have to stay in line with all the other clients in the small Waikiki office who try to save 10 Dollars with the free pickup shuttle.
Our Tip for Honolulu (Book from and to the airport the Airport and pay for the taxi!)
As of April 2017, Alamo and Enterprise do not serve the pier at the Kahului Harbor and the Lahaina Harbor with Free Shuttle Buses. Please consider booking the cars with our other partners (Thrifty or Dollar) or use a Taxi to get to the Airport. (on Maui it is about a 5 minutes ride).
Q: Should we call the local Agency before we leave the ship, so that they can send a Shuttle Bus to pick us up?
A: No, they will not come to the ship until you are on shore. (note that you will get a list with the phone numbers for all the local agencies once you've booked the cars. PLEASE PRINT THIS LIST AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE IT WITH YOU ON YOUR CRUISE together with the confirmation email for each car). With 3000 People on the Ship, it will not be possible for you or the Rental Car company to be specifically there when YOU leave the ship. The ship is like a BeeHouse and shuttle busses are coming and going.
Q: What pickup location is available for Kauai?
A: There is only one place to pick up cars in Kauai, which is at the Lihue airport (about a 5 Minute drive). So to do the booking please use the Lihue/Kauai location.
Q: Are there rental cars available for cruise ship customers in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island?
A: Yes, you can pick up a car with Dollar Rent a Car in Kona Town. Sorry, but we can't book this specific location. You can do this directly with Dollar.
The Dollar rental agency in the hotel next to the harbor within walking distance. Dollar rates in Kona Town are a little higher. They rent only midsize cars and larger. The downside is that this location closes at 4:30pm and, therefore, the last drop-off has to be before 4pm.
However, we suggest NOT to rent a car in Kona and simply enjoy the charming Kona Town by walking. This is the only stop on your cruise where you stay within walking distance of a nice little Town. The perfect place to rest and enjoy one of Hawaiis sweetest little Town. (To visit the crater and other parts of the island we suggest to use the stop at Hilo - this is less driving to the crater).

There is a shuttle bus running between the harbor and the location (please be advised that this location closes at 5:30pm and Alamo and Enterprise do not runt any free shuttles anymore.) and their LAST shuttle to the lahaina harbor is at 4:00 p.m. so folks have to be there before 4:00 p.m. to get the last shuttle to the harbor.
Q: I am staying on Maui (Kahului) and Kauai (Lihue) for 2 days each. Should I rent a car each day, and return it in the evening, or should I rent one car for the entire time and, if so, where can I park it overnight?
A: According to feedback of other cruise ship customers that have rented cars through Car Rental Hawaii, we suggest you rent a car for 2 days. There is a designated parking area where you can park the car at the pier or nearby. Ask the steward or the security agent when you leave the ship where to park the car overnight. Some of our customers have reported that someone tried to steal gas out of the car overnight, so if you have a choice to have it parked for a fee in a secured parking area, we recommend doing so!
Q: Is it better to rent the car on Maui or Kauai for 1 or 2 days?
A: If you reserve the car for 2 days and you return the car after 1 day, and you only pay for the time you had the car.
Q: How precise does the timing have to be if, for example, we are scheduled to pick up the car at 9am and then we come at 8am or 10am? Does this cause a problem or cost more?
A: No. You can easily play with plus or minus one hour. No problem.
Q: Our boat docks one night in Lahaina and the next day in Kahului. Can we rent a car in Lahaina and then drop it off at Kahului airport?
A: This is possible, but you would have to pay a $35 drop-off fee because the pick-up and drop-off location vary. Also, if you park the car in Lahaina and on the following day, are in Kahului, you would have to get to Lahaina to pick up the car (which is over an hour roundtrip).
Q: How far is the Lahaina pick-up location from the Lahaina Harbor?
A: The Lahaina pick-up location is called the "Maui - Kaanapali" location. It is about a 10 minute drive from the harbor to the location. (If the shuttle bus is not there, we suggest that you do not waste precious time waiting for it. Check with other guests and share a taxi).
